In the framework of the III World Forum on Human Rights 2023, a panel on the challenges of implementing the UN Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas will be presented. The panel will take place on Tuesday 21 March at 11am in the Frondizi Hall of the National Archive of Memory.
This talk will be moderated by Martín Fresneda, director of the Human Rights Observatory of the National Senate, and will be attended by representatives of national and Latin American peasant and human rights organisations.
Peasants play a key role in food sovereignty and security, in the fight against hunger, malnutrition and climate change, as well as in their efforts to conserve biodiversity. The application of this international legal instrument is indispensable for this sector and this is how it was interpreted at the 3rd World Forum, incorporating this new agenda into the axes addressed from a human rights perspective.
This panel proposes to share the perspectives and proposals of the peasant movement and other social actors, “we work for the inclusion of the issue of peasant rights in the public and government agenda and to influence the design and implementation of public policies to effectively guarantee the rights recognised in this declaration” says Diego Pile of the MNCI Somos Tierra and member of the Vía Campesina working team for this issue.
The World Forum on Human Rights that will take place between 20 and 24 March 2023 in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, Argentina, is a space for public debate on Human Rights in the world, the main advances and challenges focused on respect for differences, social participation, the reduction of inequalities, promoting equity and social inclusion.
The discussion on Peasant Rights will be led by Nury Martínez Silva, president of the National Federation of United Trade Unions of Colombia (FENSUAGRO – La Via Campesina), Diego Montón, National Coordination of the National Indigenous Peasant Movement We Are Land (MNCI ST), Diego Morales, director of Litigation and Legal Defence of the Centre for Legal and Social Studies (CELS) and Zulma Molloja, from the Union of Land Workers (UTT). The moderator will be Martín Fresneda, Director of the Human Rights Observatory of the Senate of the Nation and former Secretary of Human Rights of the Nation.
