Lush Spring Prize Influence Award Winner: La Via Campesina
Struggles of peasants, migrant workers and indigenous peoples across the world was recognised and honoured when La Via Campesina was awarded the Lush Spring prize for 2017, in an event held at Emerson College in East Sussex recently.
The ‘Influence Award’ was in recognition of La Via Campesina’s grassroots struggles that are calling for public policy and public opinion that promotes and supports peasant based agroecological farming in all regions of the world.
While accepting the award La Via Campesina said:
“This prize is great recognition of our work so far. It is especially important as more of our legitimate struggles are being criminalised and we are becoming increasingly repressed by leaders in many countries. We will use the funding to strengthen our movement in a bid towards realising the UN declaration on peasant rights.”
