La Via Campesina’s Statement of Solidarity with Brazil
From the international movement La Via Campesina, we condemn the terrorist acts and the attempted coup against the formal institutions of the Brazilian government of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who recently assumed the presidency of the republic.
The violence and depredation generated by neo-fascist groups, articulated and fed ideologically by former President Bolsonaro, who did not recognize his electoral defeat, instigated antidemocratic actions to reach this situation on Sunday, January 8.
We condemn the violent actions and call for the respect of the democratic order and the accountability of the coup plotters who organized and motivated such actions.
Together with our organizations of La Via Campesina Brazil we defend Food Sovereignty, Peasant Agroecology and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas (UNDROP), for health, education and quality public policies, and we are sure that Lula’s government, democratically elected, will have the capacity to articulate a collective process for a country with more dignity for their people.
Globalize the struggle, globalize hope!
