Training module N°3 | Seeds in Peasant and Indigenous Culture
La Via Campesina’s Global Campaign for Peasant Seeds, a Heritage of Peoples in the Service of Humanity is a campaign born some 19 years ago from deep within our international peasant movement. This Campaign condenses the historical struggles that diverse peasant communities and indigenous peoples around the world have been developing to defend the Peasant Seed Systems that care for and feed humanity in a cyclical, holistic and harmonious way. It is a peoples’ response to the permanent attempts by corporate power to monopolize and privatize our history, our heritage, our seeds.
For La Via Campesina, the Global Campaign continues to be of central importance in our shared struggle to build Food Sovereignty. Part of a five-part series titled, “Building Shared Knowledge on Peasant Seeds”, we proudly developed and dedicate Module 3 to the role of seeds in peasant and indigenous culture. As stated by members of La Via Campesina and our allies gathered in Jakarta back in 2006, seeds are the “life, culture and dignity” needed to build Food Sovereignty!
