Justice for Nicinha and the riverside communities of the Brazilian Amazon
Brussels, December 21, 2016
The European Coordination Via Campesina expresses its solidarity with the family and comrades in struggle of Nilce de Souza Magalhães, better known as Nicinha, who disappeared on January 7th, 2016. Her body was found 6 months later on the bottom of the Mutum River in the north of Brazil, 400 meters from her home. After undergoing a very long DNA examination, it has only now been released.
Mother, fisherwoman, activist of Brazil’s Movimento dos Atingidos por Barragens (MAB – Movement of People Affected by Dams) and a courageous woman who was not afraid to denounce the human rights violations committed by the Sustainable Energy of Brazil Consortium (ESBR) against the communities on the banks of the Madeira River, Nicinha was criminally silenced. Today, however, her voice has multiplied and continues to echo through each one of us who have joined her struggle and denounce on the occasion of her wake the hideous crimes suffered by the riverside communities of the Brazilian Amazon.
We demand justice for Nicinha from Brazilian authorities and from the state of Rondônia, as well that they guarantee the safety and integrity of Lurdilane Gomes da Silva and Iza Cristina Bello – better known as Ludma and India – comrades in struggle of Nicinha in the state of Rondônia and whose lives are currently also at risk.
