Honduras : Solidarity with the people of Honduras

COMMUNIQUE OF LA VIA CAMPESINA IN AFRICA, REGIONS 1 AND 2

Maputo, August 11, 2009

The peasant organizations, members of La Via Campesina in Africa, regions 1 and 2, want to express our complete solidarity with the social movements in struggle, and in particular the member organizations of La Via Campesina in Honduras that struggle for the respect of democracy since the military coup of June 28, 2009.

The organizations of La Via Campesina in Africa are strongly opposed to the coup, which was carried out by the Honduran Army with the support of the oligarchy of that country with the goal of defeating the social progress implemented by President Zelaya and the project of constitutional reform. This coup and the overthrow of the democratically elected President, José Manuel Zelaya, are clearly a blow against the interests of the Honduran people, their dignity and sovereignty.

The repression of the leaders of the social movements as well as all the defenders of democracy is intolerable and must stop.

In solidarity with and in support of our compañeros of La Via Campesina in Honduras:

– We demand that the physical integrity of all the demonstrators, including the leaders of La Via Campesina, be respected

– We ask for the return of the democratically elected president Zelaya and the ousting of the coup leaders

– We ask the international community to immediately demand the return of democracy in Honduras

– We support the continuation of the democratic process in Honduras
