Farmers’ Views on the FAO World Food Summit

La Via Campesina strongly supports the framework of the reformed FAO committee on food security for its democratic basis. In order to attack the problem of hunger in the world, governments need to assume their responsabilities through the implementation of public policies that support food sovereignty at all levels.

The lack of interest by the G8 heads of state clearly shows how the rich countries are not recognising the democratic framework of one country, one vote.

La Via Campesina rejects the development of a World Bank fund to tackle the food crisis. The policies implemented by this institution have contribued to the destruction of food security at a global level. A radical change of food and agricultural policies is necessary rather than more money. Governments should therefore assume their responsabilities within a democratic framework;
