Protesters storm ADB Country office in Delhi
More than 100 protesters today entered the premises of the Asian Development Bank's (ADB) Country Office in Delhi shouting "ADB Quit India Quit Asia Pacific".
Protesters blocked the gates to the building for an hour until the Delhi Police came to the rescue of the ADB staff.
The protesters under the banner of Peoples Forum against ADB (PFAADB) were observing August 9 as ADB Quit India Day in support of struggle groups and movements who were also observing a Protest Day throughout the country.
Protesters representing various organisations like Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), Matu People's Organisation, Lokayan, SPID, INSAF, Kriti, UTUC, AICCTU, NFFPFW, PEACE, SANDRP, Intercultural Resources, CSIIFI (North East), AISA, Jan Sangharsh Vahini, National Hawkers Federation stormed the ADB office around 11 am and continued their protests shouting slogans like "We can survive without ADB and stop plundering our natural resources".
The protesters, inside the ADB office were manhandled by the ADB staff and security people. Three women protesters were also roughed up. Peoples Forum against ADB is going to take up this issue very strongly with the Government of India.
The protesters were also intrigued to hear an ADB senior staff instructing the police to 'put the protesters behind bar so that they never do this the next time'.
The August 9 ADB Quit India protests are a follow up to the series of such protests and demonstrations against International Financial Institutions like ADB and World Bank and are continuation to the huge protests that erupted in Hyderabad in May this year against the ADB's Annual Governors' Meeting.
