Scotland: Crofters applaud peasant protest

17 April 2009

The Scottish Crofting Foundation (SCF), the only member-led organisation dedicated to promoting crofting, pledged their support to Via Campesina, the world peasants’ movement, today the International Day of Peasants’ Struggle.

SCF Parliamentary spokesman Norman Leask said “The struggle for the rights of the small-scale food producers, or peasants, is something going on all around the world and is something everyone should be concerned about. Crofters are part of this struggle, striving to get a fair deal for their efforts and way of life. Peasants throughout the world are the backbone of rural economies and communities and today is their day.”

Via Campesina, the world peasants’ movement with more than 200 million members is lobbying governments who are meeting for the G8 in Treviso, Italy over the next 3 days.

Mr Leask again “as the largest association of small-scale food producers in the UK the SCF is joining Via Campesina, the world’s largest association of peasants and the only effective voice for this sector on European and world political arenas.”
