Urban land into gardener’s hands!

Celebrating the 17th of April in a community garden in Berlin (Germany)

“Urban land into gardener’s hands!” was the rallying slogan of this years festival in the community garden „Ton, Steine, Gaerten“ on the 17th of April in Berlin. It was the highlight of the series of events „fresh from the hot spot kitchen: on agricultural politics from above and resistance from below“, informing about different aspects of Industrial agribusiness and struggles and alternatives developed from below.

300 people from the neighbourhood, (garden-) activists, farmers from the environs and gardeners met and celebrated in solidarity with the worldwide struggle for peasants rights and food sovereignty. Little plants and knowledge were exchanged on a seed (swap) market, and beside (organic) peoples food and music there were exhibitions about La Via Campesina and about different city-community-gardens in Berlin. It was a further step in the process of regaining knowledge about food production here. In the afternoon there was also a guerrilla gardening action in the public park opposite the garden, in which different vegetables, fruit-trees and berry bushes were planted.

The events were organized by different grass root-activists.
