Brazil: Landless Women mobilize in defense of life this March 8
In the most difficult moment of the pandemic, which is plaguing Brazil and which – so far – has killed more than 260 thousand people, women from more than 80 organizations in the popular field, come together to support and spread solidarity in actions in the four corners of the country .
The activities will include training and conversation cycles, revitalization of gardens and forests of biodiversity, planting of trees, blood donation, distribution of lunch boxes and donations of food and hygiene products. The actions are in addition to the National Plan Day “Planting Trees, Produce Healthy Foods”, which started in 2019, and the activities of Paulo Freire’s Centenary, celebrated this year.
Under the motto “Women for life sowing resistance, against hunger and violence”, Landless women underscore the need for a permanent fight for the vaccine for all and all Brazilians, for the maintenance of emergency aid and against all forms of violence.
It is known that during the period of isolation, violence against women increased throughout the country. Brazil registered 648 femicides in the first half of 2020, 1.9% more than in the same period of 2019, according to the Brazilian Public Security Forum (FBSP). In a recent statement, the global director of UN Women, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, said that, at this moment, “violence against women is a pandemic as devastating as the coronavirus”.
Therefore, it is necessary to reaffirm the commitment to continue fighting and mobilizing in practical actions, as can be seen below. It is also important to note that the entire program was designed to respect the moment in which we live. All health and safety protocols will be strictly respected.
