Colombia: New agrarian courts raise hopes for end to land conflicts

Feb 16, 20247 min de lecture
The first five agrarian courts will open in May in the cities of Cartagena, Quibdó, Popayán, Pasto and Tunja, with 65 more to come. Peasant farmers, or campesinos, have long struggled for recognition by the state. Another effort by President Petro to resolve the unequal land divide is a promise to redistribute more than 3 million hectares (7.4 million acres) of land.

Special call for solidarity

La Via Campesina calls on the governments of the world, and in particular progressive governments and those of the South, to do everything in their power to end apartheid and Israel’s colonization. The Governments have a responsibility to coordinate their efforts to secure a future for Palestine and the entire Palestinian people, and to ensure that justice is done in the face of Israel’s crimes against humanity.

Your donations help us remain autonomous!

La Via Campesina depends on funding from our supporters who are committed to the vision of food sovereignty. Your support allows the global movement to remain autonomous and independent of all influences, and to voice our grassroots proposals and demonstrate our agroecological practices in international and national policy-making spaces. We believe that the transformation of our society into a more inclusive and equitable one requires the collective efforts of all who firmly believe in the ideas of social justice and equity.
