Peasant Agroecology and Sustainable Land Use Practices Boost Biodiversity | IFAD Podcast (Episode 60)

26 June 202427 June 2024

Chengeto Sandra Muzira, a young peasant from the Zimbabwe Smallholder Organic Farmers Forum (ZIMSOFF) and a member of the International Coordination Committee of La Via Campesina, recently spoke on IFAD’s Farms-Food-Future podcast. She highlighted the importance of sustainable land use in agroecological practices.

Chengeto explained how agroecology upholds peasant autonomy in food production, safeguards biodiversity, and supports local communities. It bolsters the resilience of local food systems by promoting the cultivation of a diverse range of crops, enriching local biodiversity, and enhancing nutritional balance in diets. “Sustainable land use practices in agroecology prioritize soil health and water conservation, crucial factors for regions and communities facing water scarcity,” said Chengeto.
