Peru: We demand respect for human rights and call for dialogue with the protesters

12 December 202222 April 2024

(December 12, 2022) The Coordinadora Latinoamericana de Organizaciones del Campo (CLOC-Via Campesina), expresses its concern about the coup d’état against Pedro Castillo, the democratically elected President.

On December 7, the right-wing within the Peruvian Parliament removed President Pedro Castillo from office after he declared a state of emergency and attempted to dissolve the legislative branch. This comes in a context of ungovernability marked by three attempts to impeach President Pedro Castillo after only 16 months in office.

CLOC-Via Campesina expresses its concern about this political crisis in Peru. Members of CLOC-Via Campesina, as well as various social and popular movements in Peru are mobilizing in different regions to demand respect for democracy, the popular vote and their rights.

We, the members of CLOC-Via Campesina, do not recognise the provisional government and demand the immediate release and reinstatement of President Pedro Castillo.

We stand in solidarity with our organisations in Peru in their call for a new constituent assembly, and demand absolute respect for the right to social protest and the non-use of violence that leads to violations of the human rights of the protesters.

We express our solidarity with the people who are currently exercising their right to protest, an essential element for the consolidation of democratic societies.
