Bhartiya Kisan Union meets India’s official delegation to WTO, conveys their demands and positions

14 June 202222 April 2024

Geneva, June 14, 2022: During the week of action ahead of the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference in Geneva, members of the Indian farmers’ organisation Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) and other members of the Indian civil society met with the country’s official delegation to present their position on food and agricultural policies aimed at self-sufficiency. Bhartiya Kisan Union is a member organisation of La Via Campesina.

In this context, it is also important to highlight the position of the Indian state with regard to the ongoing negotiations in Geneva.

“India’s experience has been to move from being a food-deficit nation to a largely food self-sufficient nation. State support in the form of subsidies and other government interventions has played a very important role in achieving this self-sufficiency.”

Statement by India at the 12th Ministerial Conference of the WTO during the Thematic Session on Agriculture

India is resisting the pressure from rich countries that want to impose more Free Trade. La Via Campesina urges the Indian people not to give in to these pressures.
