Nicaraguan women: transforming lives, protecting the land

27 May 202122 April 2024

This video tells the story of the long struggle of the Gloria Quintanilla Women’s Cooperative in the community of Santa Julia (south of capital city Managua). Set up in 2008, the cooperative, supported by the Rural Workers Association (ATC), has transformed the lives of the whole community through their commitment to food sovereignty, agroecology, gender equality, and land rights.

As defenders of the rights of women and girls, the cooperative is building an understanding and legacy for the community that “men and women are born with equal rights and equal opportunities.”

As small scale farmers and guardians of the environment, agroecology is fundamental: “we use agroecology because in this way we take care of our farms, our health and (the wellbeing) of future generations.”

Learn more about how they have mobilized to grow healthy local food and transform their community in a way that respects people and the land. For further information about the Gloria Quintanilla Cooperative and the community of Santa Julia, read their testimonies “The Earth is Our Mother”

Enjoy the video and join the women for a webinar also jointly organized by the Friends of the ATC and Nicaragua Solidarity Campaign on Wednesday 16 June, 7pm – 8.30pm GMT. Further details to follow.
