International Day of Peasant Struggles - #17April | Peasants' Rights | Southern and Eastern Africa

17 April: A message of solidarity from Peasant Agroecology Summer School in Kenya

17 April 201922 April 2024

Kenyan Peasants League (KPL) shall be marking the International Day of Peasants Struggle 2019 on 17 April 2019 on the Sidelines of the Peasants Agroecology Summer School to take place in Mariwa Village on 15 to 17 April 2019.

Currently in Kenya, there is a massive onslaught on the Peasants way of life through frivolous legislation aimed at criminalizing the Peasants Way of life.

On 17 April 2019, KPL shall mark the day by a ceremony where KPL shall state our opposition against the proposed Food Crops Regulations 2019 that among other things requires Peasant farmers to register before farming, criminalizes growing of crops and rearing of animals at the same time and forces Peasant Farmers to join associations that must registered by the County Governments.

The regulations also criminalizes use of animal manure and growing of crops along road sides a common practice in the cities like Nairobi where our members farm along the roads.

On the day KPL shall also make public our strategies to make Kenyan Government Implement the Peasants Rights Declaration.
