MST Fair holds seminars and discussions about healthy eating

7 May 20189 May 2018

Four-day event takes place from Thursday (3) to Sunday (6) in São Paulo, Brazil
From the MST website
Not only tons of healthy products are being sold at the 3rd National Agrarian Reform Fair organized by the Landless Workers’ Movement (Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra – MST), but the event also has a calendar full of seminars dedicated to political education and culture. The activities aim to expand the conversation with the population and bring countryside and city closer together to discuss the need and the possibilities of healthy eating habits for Brazilians.

“The National Fair has a key role for the agrarian reform agenda, as we understand that land reform and the Brazilian society reconcile through healthy food production. And because it’s a perspective on an alternative project, this reconciliation does not happen just through food production or marketing. So the seminars are being held to promote debates, conversations, and amplify different views on the educational dimensions of food production,” says Ceres Hadich, a member of the national board of the MST.

The fair will hold further, cross-sectional discussions around the debate on healthy eating and the popular agrarian reform project, and this year it will focus on topics related to agrochemicals, school nutrition, the importance of water, and public policy.
Understanding that the debate about healthy eating is not limited to a healthy diet, there will also be a dedicated calendar of discussions about the murder of Rio de Janeiro councilwoman Marielle Franco and Anderson Gomes, who was driving her home when their car was attacked by gunmen.

“To promote this debate on the criminalization of LGBT people, the debate about race, among other topics that are also part of what we want for the countryside and the city. This is why the seminar ‘Justice for Marielle and Anderson: against military intervention and black genocide’ (‘Justiça por Marielle e Anderson: contra a intervenção militar e o genocídio negro’) is very appropriate in this perspective – to develop a project for agriculture that goes beyond the relationship between food production and marketing,” Hadich said.

Many different actors will take part in the discussion panels at the 3rd edition of the National Agrarian Reform Fair, including members of social movements, civil society, institutions, and entities. The activities are taking place from May 3rd to 6th at the Água Branca Park in the West Area of São Paulo, Brazil.
