Peasants mobilize GMO labeling in Curitiba

17 March 2006

Yesterday (March 16), nearly 1500 peasants from Via Campesina participated in a demonstration in front of the Expo Trade Center in Curitiba where the 3rd Meeting of the Parties to the Cartegena Protocol for Biosecurity (MOP 3) is being held. Armed with flags, chants, signs and banners the peasants protested against the 4-year implementation period proposed by Brasil for identifying GMO products and denounced violations by transnational companies. "We call for approval of the label "contains GMOs" and want the identification of these types of products to start immediately", said Cledicir Zucchi of Via Campesina. During the mobilization, peasants blocked 2 of the 3 access roads to the Expo Trade Center. This morning the peasants will participate in a debate on the privatization of natural resources taking place at the Global Forum of Civil Society.
