(Maputo, 05 August) - In Marracuene, a district south of Maputo in Mozambique, around 40 men and women activists, peasants and workers of rural social movements, are participating in the second exchange and political education course for members of La Via Campesina from Portuguese-speaking countries.

Inspired by the motto "Educate men and women to win the war and create a new society"1, the course participants are planning to use this training "to break the traditional boundaries that prevent the sharing of their knowledge and their seeds, something that is currently done by multinational corporations, "explains Maria Gorete, one of the teachers and an activist with the MST and La Via Campesina Brazil.

European Coordination Via Campesina

Press Release

Brussels, May 31st , 2010

Last night Israeli army commandos stormed an international humanitarian fleet on its way to Gaza to deliver medicines, medical equipment, building materials and food. The people of Gaza lack these materials due to the blockade imposed by the state of Israel. Civilians were killed and others wounded.

The attack occurred in international waters. It is therefore in terms of law, an act of piracy.

The European Coordination Via Campesina is shocked and outraged. It asks that Catherine Ashton, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Vice - President of the European Commission, acts without delay and as representative of the EU

  • Condemns this violation of international law
  • Provides humanitarian assistance to participants in the flotilla
  • Calls for the urgent establishment of an international commission of inquiry into the attack
  • Suspends trade agreements between the EU and Israel
  • Acts to lift the blockade of Gaza

The European Coordination Via Campesina, an organization of European farmers, is in solidarity with the thousands of farmers whose lands are occupied in Gaza and the West Bank.

(Tegucigalpa, 25th  September 2009) This morning the president and several of those who have accompanied him in the Brazilian embassy since Monday 21st September 2009, denounced the attempts being made on the lives of all those inside the embassy. The army has begun to put gasses and toxic substances into the space, which are seriously affecting the health of all those in the building.

The health problems suffered by the president Zelaya and his companions are many and various. These gasses have catastrophic effects on the body including: vomiting, headaches, muscular pain, nosebleeds and burning in the throat. The majority of those inside the embassy are presenting these symptoms.

A medical doctor, Dr. Castellanos, went to the site to assess the level of contamination in the area, but the police refused to let him pass. From a considerable distance he was able to determine that there is a fairly high level of contamination in the area and its surrounds, because the people living around the embassy are also displaying symptoms like those denounced by the President to the national and international press.

Today in a press conference, president Zelaya condemned all the repression they are suffering at the hands of this /de facto /regime and showed photos of soldiers hanging bags containing toxic liquids.

By Carlos Marentes, La Vía Campesina

As a response to the big national march of the National Front of Resistance Against the Coup, which lasted seven days and had a participation of thousands of people from all corners of Honduras, the coup gang, headed by Roberto Micheletti has unleashed a brutal repression against the leaders of organizations which form part of the front, against women, teachers, students and against the people in general.

August 12th 2009

Last night at 11:23 pm, during curfew which began at 10pm, unknown individuals driving a cream colour Toyota Turismo with the license plate PCA1981 fired bullets at the office of Vía Campesina located in the Alameda neighbourhood of Tegucigalpa, Honduras which is coordinated by Rafael Alegría. The act was a clear attack against our social organizations and leaders who are part of the National Front Against the Coup. In addition to the recent attack on Vía Campesina, a bomb capable of killing 15 people went off in the building of the Beverage Workers Union (STIBYS, by its Spanish initials) on July 26th 2009. Both organizations are part of the National Front Against the Coup.

We condemn this incident given that the activities of Vía Campesina and the National Front Against the Coup are completely peaceful. It is important to mention that during curfew only police are permitted to be in the street.
