 La Via Campesina delegates from Thailand, Korea, Norway and Honduras gave away seeds to all the participants as a welcome to the conference. Henry Saragih, General Coordinator of La Via Campesina, introduced the group and discussed how La Via Campesina is a legitimate global voice for millions of peasants. International trade policies have the same destructive effect on farmers, workers and the environment all over the world.

Responding to calls by Lebanese civil society organizations to come to their war-ravaged country, another batch of parliamentarians and civil society representatives from various countries are going on an international peace and solidarity delegation to Lebanon from August 12 to 16. This delegation includes representatives from the Philippines, Brazil, France, Norway, India, and Spain.

 (Hong Kong) More than two hundred farmers from the Korean Peasant League (KPL), a member organisation of La Via Campesina, jumped into the cold water of Hong Kong harbour to reach the Convention Centre where the Ministerial Conference is deciding their future. This action occurred at the end of a peaceful march when thousands of farmers and their allies were blocked by barricades in front of the Convention Centre.

In the aftermath of the Heiligendamm summit, it appears clearly that the G8 has lost all credibility and legitimacy. As it now happens for most high level world meetings, the G8 summit that took place in Heiligendamm, Germany, from June 6 to 8 had to hide behind barbed fences and in a civil war atmosphere to protect the richest nation’s heads of state from people’s protests. This does not only emphasize the illegitimacy of the G8 leaders who decide the fate of the rest of the world. It also shows the growing and massive opposition towards their neo-colonial and neo-liberal policies within their own populations and beyond.

On September 26, 2005 in Sabaneta, Alberto Arvelo Torrealba municipality, state of Barinas, Venezuela an agreement on agricultural technical cooperation was signed between the Via Campesina- MST and the Bolivarian Government of Venezuela.
