Post Hong Kong negotiations; farmers groups skeptical of India’s position

21st March 2006, New Delhi

The Indian Coordination Committee of Farmers’ Movement, an affiliate of the La Via Campesina in South Asia organized a massive rally near the Indian Parliament in New Delhi on 21st March protesting against the import of wheat and urging the government not to compromise agriculture for other gains at the WTO negotiations. In a memorandum to the Prime Minister of India, they condemned the Government and its trade negotiators for hurrying up completion of Doha Development Round (DDA) and sticking to 30th April deadline to conclude negotiating modalities in agriculture. They also blamed the Minister of Commerce, Mr. Kamal Nath, for “using” the developing countries in order to save the institutional failure of WTO in Hong Kong. In their memorandum, they demanded that the Government must keep agriculture and food out of the World Trade Organisation.

(Curitiba Brazil, 24 March 2006) The international peasants’ movement La Via Campesina celebrates the decision made today by the Convention on Biodiversity’s working group at COP 8 in Curitiba, Brazil, to maintain and strengthen the de facto moratorium on Terminator technology. This technology, also referred to as GURTs (Genetic Use Restriction Technology), inserts genes to make the plant’s seeds sterile: the original seed will grow, but the seeds that the plant produces will not germinate.

Statement from La Via Campesina in support to the women from Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil)

(Curitiba, March 22nd 2006) We, peasants from the international movement La Vía Campesina, wish to express our indignation before the violent police action of search and seizure, which was carried out on March 21st, in the National and State Operational Secretariat of the Association of Peasant Women in Passo Fundo  (Rio Grande do Sul state – Brazil). This violent action by the Civil Police of Camaquã and police agents from Barra do Ribeiro and Passo Fundo is another example of physical and psychological aggression against women rural workers – who have been historically the main victims of the system.

Farmers protest against WTO and import of wheat

On March 21st farmers from six north Indian states belonging to BHARATIYA KISAN UNION supported by former prime minister of India V.P.Singh and former Union minister Ajith Singh on Tuesday marched to the Parliamnet protesting against the import of wheat and urging the government not to compromise agriculture for other gains at the WTO negotiations
